Roma –
Gennaro Gattuso removed from the coach’s chair after failing to pass Italian national team the 2026 World Cup. Here’s the statement.
“With sadness in my heart, because we have not succeeded in achieving the targets we have set, I consider my experience as national team coach to be over,” said Gattuso on the official website of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Friday (3/4).
“The Azzurri shirt is the most valuable asset that exists in football; therefore, it is only fitting that a technical evaluation for its future be carried out immediately. I would like to thank Presidents Gabriele Gravina and Gianluigi Buffon, as well as the entire Federation staff, for the trust and support they have always given me.”

“It is an honor to lead the national team and do it with a group of players who show commitment and love for this uniform. However, my biggest thanks go to the fans, to all Italians who in the last few months have never stopped showing their love and support for the national team. Always with blue in their hearts,” said the AC Milan legend.
Gennaro Gattuso Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after losing in the playoffs. Alessandro Bastoni et al fell from Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Playing at the Bilino Polje Stadium, Zenica, Wednesday (1/4), Italy lost 1-4 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes. This defeat made Pizza Country fail to reach the World Cup for the third time in a row since the 2018 edition.
Previously, FIGC President Gabriele Gravina was also urged to resign from his position. After refusing, the 72 year old man finally resigned from his position.
So are Gianluigi Buffon. The Azzurri goalkeeping legend who was trusted to be the head of the Italian national team delegation also chose to withdraw after failing to win 2026 World Cup.
